If you are into homoeopathy you may have heard the term ’tissue salts’. They are trace minerals that help give back the nutrients we so crucially need in our bodies. I learned about tissue salts through my naturopath and I’ve tried all kinds in the past. I will discuss one brand in particular famously known as ‘Schuessler’s tissue salts’ and what my experience has been with them.
What are Tissue Salts?
Tissue salts, also known as “cell salts” are minerals that are found in rocks and in the soil. These salts are essentially found naturally in our bodies. Such minerals such as calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, sodium, and silica that work at the cellular level.
How Does Tissue Salts Work?
Originally invented by a man named Schuessler, that is why it is called ‘Schuessler Tissue Salts’. The theory behind these salts is that through the use of homoeopathic medicine there are 12 essential minerals used to help balance the body, restore proper cell function and to maintain good health in general.
Tissue salts are ideal to use as they:
- Absorb rapidly
- Lactose free
- Non-toxic and non-addictive
- Taste good
- Safe to use with prescription medicines
- Suitable for general health conditions
Each tissue salt contains a trace mineral and targets a certain ailment of the body. Taking these salts helps bring back the body to homeostasis. (natural order). It is said that 70% of vital trace minerals are lost in our food due to the way it is processed so we receive about 30% of minerals in our body. No wonder people are malnourished and get sick!
There are combination tissue salts but I will only concentrate on the 12 below since they are essential to our body and are more concentrated.

+ Out of the ones I tried they were great to use. They were all gentle on my stomach and easily dissolved in my mouth which made it easy to swallow. Sometimes I have issues swallowing pills. These ones I could chew or swallow with ease.
+ Each one affected me differently but for the most part, they corrected the issues I had. Such as clearing of my skin, removing fatigue, strengthening my tooth enamel, and calming my nerves.
+ The cost was pretty reasonable averaging about $12 per bottle and you don’t need to buy all 12 bottles just the ones that you find you lack mineral in.
– One negative experience I could say is that I believe I overindulged in one tissue salt mineral. I believe it was ‘Silica’, I ate one a day for 3 months and shortly after I experienced kidney stones. I am not sure if this is related but given ‘silica’ is basically sand and can crystallize that may have been a factor in my kidney stones so I urge caution when using this mineral.
– Can take a while to feel and notice effects, so give it at least a month for it to work effectively.
Mineral Deficiencies Diagnosis
This is a photo I came across on Pinterest below is a picture of a woman where someone performed a facial analysis on her. Some believe mineral deficiencies show up on the face. See below for an example. For more facial analysis charts, see my Chinese medicine face map post.
The best course of action is, of course, is to ask your local naturopath for what they recommend for you to use. A test ordered by your naturopath will be able to determine what mineral you are deficient in, the test can be done through a ‘hair analysis’ and is generally quite cost-effective.
